Hi there!

What is Root Canal Treatment?

Root canal treatment involves physically preparing and cleaning the areas inside your tooth which normally contains nerve tissue (dental pulp). This treatment is mainly when the dental pulp is damaged and cannot heal (it is irreversibly inflamed) or if it is dead and the space is infected with bacteria.

We will make sure your treatment is pain free by numbing the tooth using local anaesthetic and a rubber sheet will be placed over your tooth ensuring an oral bacteria free working environment. Then, with the aid of magnification and illumination, an access cavity entry into the dental pulp area will be made.

Each root canal will be physically prepared with special Endodontic files and washed out with an antibacterial solution, the majority of the appointment time will be spent on this to maximise bacterial reduction. After drying the canals with sterile points they are filled with a heated filling material, this is packed into the canals to give a well condensed 3D filling. A sealing restoration is placed into the access cavity created at the beginning of the appointment, preventing re-entry of bacteria into the canals.

A letter or email will be sent to your regular dentist describing the treatment along with any X-rays we have taken. They will then discuss with you the definitive restoration that can be made for the tooth, usually a root canal treated tooth will need a crown to prevent the tooth from breaking.

Slight discomfort after treatment is common and normally lasts a few days. Painkillers can be taken to ease the discomfort during this healing phase. Do not exceed the dosage advised on the packaging.
